Today we will begin our surrealism unit.
Surrealism is a 20th-century avant-garde movement in art and literature that sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind by the irrational juxtaposition of images. Surrealist artists combined images that were not normally seen together. Surrealism began in the 1920s and was inspired by the psychologist Sigmund Freud. He thought and wrote about the mind, dreams, memories and human instincts.
Dali (one of the most famous Surrealists) once wrote, ‘I do not understand why, when I ask for a grilled lobster in a restaurant, I am never served a cooked telephone’.
